Charity Challenge - Week 3 Night 1

Welcome to the start of Week 3 of the O’Sullivan Family Charity Challenge! All this month Rachel and I are playing board games every day and while we do so we’re raising money and hopefully some awareness for CAMH / The Center for Addiction and Mental Health.

If you’d like to donate you can do so here.

So far we’ve raised $320 of our $600 goal! Thank you to everyone who has donated!

In terms of the competition Rachel has taken a commanding lead 2 weeks to 0. When Rachel won the first two weeks in 2017 she went on to lose week 3 and secure the trophy in week 4. Hopefully, for me at least, we’re not heading to that territory again!

The Choice

Since Rachel closed out a win on Week 2 I get to start Week 3 with the game selection. I’m going to pick a game I haven’t played since at least 2016 but I’m pretty confident that I can win. Tonight we’ll be playing Dominion.

The Game

Dominion is the granddaddy of deck builders (the inspiration for favourite games like Clank!) – in a deck builder you start out with a humble deck and then build up more powerful cards over time. Here’s the description of Dominion from Boardgamegeek:

In Dominion, each player starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can “buy” as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious victory points by game end.

The Result

I completely missed the mark here. From the very start I could tell Rachel had got off to a slightly faster start and despite a heroic fight back in the late game Rachel managed to collect the most points. She secured a 70 to 56 victory.

Gosh we really loved this game, it’s hard to believe we haven’t played it in 4 years.

We’ll be back tomorrow to keep week 3 moving, hopefully I’ll be able to get my foothold in week 3 because if I lose this week it’s all over!
